Walk into any home goods store during grilling season and you will find massive 20-piece tool sets in aluminum cases, promising everything you need for the perfect barbecue. The truth is, most of those tools are junk — flimsy, poorly designed, and rarely used.
You need about six tools to grill well, and each one should be built to last.
The Essential Grilling Tools
1. Long-Handled Tongs
The single most important grilling tool. At least 16 inches long with spring-loaded tension. Look for stainless steel construction with welded, not riveted, joints.
2. Wide Spatula
For flipping burgers, fish, and delicate vegetables. The blade should be at least 4 inches wide with a beveled edge. Solid stainless steel construction is non-negotiable.
3. Instant-Read Thermometer
This is the tool that separates good grilling from great grilling. Look for a digital thermometer with fast read time and accuracy within 1 degree. The Thermoworks Thermapen is the professional standard.
4. Grill Brush
A clean grate prevents food from sticking. Look for stainless steel bristles and a scraper edge. For safety, consider nylon bristle brushes or pumice stones to avoid wire bristle shedding.
5. Chimney Starter
If you cook with charcoal, a chimney starter is non-negotiable. It lights charcoal evenly without lighter fluid and gets coals ready in about 15 minutes.
6. Grill Basket
For vegetables, shrimp, and small items that would fall through the grate. Look for a basket with small perforations and a hinged design with a long handle.
Tools You Do Not Need
- Corn cob holders: Use tongs instead.
- Fork for flipping meat: Piercing meat releases juices. Always use tongs or a spatula.
- Basting brush in cheap sets: Use a silicone basting brush instead.
- Meat tenderizer mallet: Do it in the kitchen before going outside.
Tool Maintenance
Clean tools after each use while they are still warm. Dry thoroughly before storing to prevent rust. Store tools indoors or in a grill cabinet. Once a season, inspect handles and oil wooden handles with food-grade mineral oil.
