How I Tested
Stain Removal
I intentionally created stains on my test carpet: red wine, coffee, pet urine, chocolate, and mud. I let each one set for 24 hours, then cleaned them following the manufacturer's instructions.
Ease of Use
How heavy is it? How easy is it to fill and empty the tanks? How long does the cord reach? How much of a pain is cleanup?
Noise
Carpet cleaners are loud. But some are noticeably louder than others. I measured decibel levels from 3 feet away.
Drying Time
The faster your carpet dries, the less chance of mold or mildew. I tracked how long it took for each cleaned area to feel completely dry.

The Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution is the best carpet cleaner I tested for most homes. It's powerful, relatively easy to maneuver, and handled every stain I threw at it.
The "2X" in the name refers to the dual rotating brush rolls that scrub your carpet from both sides. It really does make a difference — I could see the dirt being lifted out with every pass.

Don't let the small size fool you — it did a respectable job on most stains. It struggled a bit with really set-in pet stains, but for everyday spills and regular maintenance, it's more than enough.
The compact design makes it easy to store, and it's light enough that you can carry it up stairs without breaking a sweat.

It actually works really well. The auto-mix feature gets the cleaning solution ratio right every time, and the auto-dry feature does a good job of extracting water — my carpet was dry in about 2 hours.
